Mind Vs. Body, and Some Goal Updates

Lincoln Park (from the 2012 Turkey Trot)

I decided to work from home today because I was hit with so many projects toward the end of last week. Spending my normal commuting time (which is about 3 hours, total) working seemed like a better use of my time and would probably help with my stress level.  Once it started getting light out, it was clear we were in for a beautiful, sunny morning (with rain in the forecast all afternoon/evening).  I love seeing the sun so much, my first thought was that I should sneak out for a run later in the morning, before it starts raining.  But about 5 minutes into walking the dogs this morning, I knew I'd need to take today to rest.  I've been on the verge of shin splints for the past week, so much so that even walking downstairs and around the block this morning started irritating my shins.  I think this probably means I'm actually experiencing mild shin splints, but I had them so bad last year when I started working out regularly that I don't consider myself as having them until I'm in so much pain that I can barely walk.  Yeah, that's healthy.  But I ran more this past week than I have in any given week, possibly ever, so it makes sense that my legs might need to get used to that.  Although I don't often lack for motivation anymore, I have a really hard time resting when I really want to exercise.  I'm still constantly worried that I'll lose the momentum that I've worked so hard to build up, but in the end, it's just one day.  And I know it's better for me to listen to my body and rest and give my shins a nice ice massage than to push myself too hard and get seriously injured, but it's still hard.  I may go to another TRX class at my gym after work, since I know that won't bother my legs, or maybe just take the day off completely.  How do you handle a rest day when you want to work out?

In other running news, I've made a little progress on my 2013 goal of training for a half marathon by finally picking one!  I decided to sign up for the Chicago Women's Half on June 23rd.  I did the Women's 5k last year, in its inaugural year, and it was a really good experience!  I had a hard time with this decision though, because I'm not a great warm weather runner.  I mentioned in a previous post that Kim was nice enough to agree to run my first half with me, so I talked the pros and cons of an early summer versus a fall half with her because I just couldn't decide (I should note that I asked Kim because I love running with her, obviously, but also because my trainer wanted me to run with an experienced runner who has done a half before - having help picking a race is probably one of many reasons why I needed to go with a pro!).  So the choice came down to: doing a fall half, which would see me doing most of my training in the hottest part of the summer with a good chance of warm weather on race day anyway (it was 60 and sunny during the Chicago Lung Run last year in mid-September, and it was even 60 degrees on my wedding day in November, so there's no counting on cooler weather in fall anymore); or signing up for the Women's Half in June, doing all of my training in milder weather during the spring and then possibly having a hot race day.  It did start getting pretty warm during the Women's 5k last year (a lot of this was due to there not being much shade on the 5k route - I'm curious if there's more shade on the half route), but I thought I'd chance it anyway.  The half starts at 6:30am, and I plan to run it in about 2 and a half hours (sorry Kim!), so I'm hoping it won't be too hot by 9am.  When it came down to it, I knew I'd have a harder time sticking to a training schedule during the hot, humid summer than during the spring, and a fall race date could be just as likely to be hot as late June could.

Another deciding factor is that a lot of my family is going to be in town for the Women's Half.  My mom's cousin and her daughter are running the half as a mother-daughter team (how cool is that?!), and I think at least one more of my cousins is planning to do the half.  Some more cousins and aunts are coming along too, making a girls weekend out of it, and my parents will be here.  When I thought about it, it'd be so cool to do my first half with so many people here to cheer me on. What are the deciding factors for you when signing up for a race?

As far as training goes, I'm going to use the Hal Higdon Novice 2 program, though I do have to tweak it a little to fit around my gym class and personal training schedule.  But looking at it, it doesn't seem as big and scary as I thought it would be.

And speaking of goal progress, I can check another one off the list - planning a honeymoon!  We booked our trip last night.  We're spending 12 days in Hawaii in April!  We'll be island hopping, starting in Maui, then going to the big island, and finishing up in Kauai.  I'm SO EXCITED!  I've never been to Hawaii, but have always wanted to go there.  And I'll be a couple weeks into my half training, so I'm definitely looking forward to some runs there!  If you've been to Hawaii, do you have any recommendations?

  1. This race sounds really motivating. It's so nice to work within a plan sometimes. I've been to the Big Island - don't miss the visitor's centre on Mauna Kea, the stars are absolutely incredible.

    1. You were in Hawaii pretty recently, weren't you? Thanks for the tip! I just looked up the Star Gazing program and it sounds amazing! Definitely adding that to the list :)

  2. Yay, I am so glad you booked your trip, you will have an amazing time. There is tons to do on the big island. Take flashlights and go see the volcano at night!

    1. Oh wow, that sounds so cool! We're on the big island for 3 days, so any other suggestions are welcome! :)

  3. Can't wait to hear all about Hawaii! I know there is so much to do there but haven't been since I was 3 years old :-)

Picking a race is tough. For me it comes down to location, price, and if people I know are running. Or if it's just a really unique experience (running in a cemetery at night, anyone?). I also prefer races and race organizers that have a reputation for putting on a well-run event.

    1. Have you done the cemetery runs? I think Rosehill had one last year, but the timing just didn't work out. It sounds so fun though!

Definitely agree with your point on the race organizers doing a good job. Even in my limited experience, there's at least one I did last year that I won't repeat because it wasn't very organized and was more of a hassle than anything.

  4. Hawaii sounds wonderful. I haven't been there yet, but it's on my list.

  5. For me, picking a race usually comes down to: chances of it being hot, cost, how easy it is to get there, and whether or not there is beer. Priorities!

I ran the womens half last year, it was really fun! I am trying to see if i can be a pacer for it this year!

    1. Those are all really important! I'm much more likely to do a run that starts at Montrose Harbor, by me, than Hyde Park, because it's a pain for me to get to. And obviously beer. That's why I'm so looking forward to my first Shuffle!

  6. Yay for picking a half marathon and for the women's half!!! I heard great things about it last year so I am sure you will have a blast and do awesome! You can't beat having Kim there to run it with you, either. You are in good hands! And I've used Hal Higdon's training plans loosely (basically I just follow the weekend long-run plan, but am much more relaxed about the weekday runs), and I've find them very doable.

Ahhh, Hawaii!!! You are going to have such a great time there. I've been to the Big Island and Kauai, as well as Oahu, and love it so much that I wish that I WAS Hawaiian. =) On the Big Island, my husband and I stayed in Waikaloa, which is on the west side and very desert-like with volcanic rock. We went to a really fun, family-atmosphere luau in Kona - I think it's at the Sheraton. Then we took a couple of days to drive over to Hilo on the east side, which is much more lush and tropical. There, we went to Volcanos National Park, which was very cool - a lot of it was closed due to active volcano activity, but we did get to see Kilauea Volcano spitting out orange lava!

Kauai is very quiet and secluded. I was there with my parents and we spent a lot of time just driving around to see the various beaches. We also went to Waimea Canyon which was amazing. Incidentally, there were lots of wild chickens running around.

Can't wait to hear more about your trip in April - be sure to take lots of pictures!!!

    1. Using the training plan loosely makes me feel a little more relieved about it too! I want to try to do all of the recommended runs, but I know some weeks it's just not possible.

Thanks for all the Hawaii tips! I think I heard the luau at the Hyatt was pretty good too, but we have 11 nights there, so we can probably check out multiple luaus :) Volcanos National Park is also on the list! My brother and his lady friend biked it last year, which looked awesome! And I'm looking forward to ending our trip with a few days of relaxation in Kauai. Ahhhhh, is it April yet?

  7. YAY for booking the trip! AHH! I am so excited about it! And about hearing more about the planning :)

Thanks for the kind words. I am so stoked for our half. We are going to have a ton of fun!

Ugh. I hate taking rest days when I don't want to. I get cranky. I need a distraction. How did you deal with Monday's? Are your shins better?

    1. I spent the hour that I would've been exercising on Monday shopping for cute stuff for Hawaii, so I dealt :) But I do still have this nagging feeling that I was being lazy or should have exercised, even though I know rest is better in the end.

My shins are starting to feel better, but I'm considering letting them rest until Saturday :(

    2. Did you get shorts?! ;)

Be smart with the rest. I totes understand if you need to cancel tomorrow.

    3. Yep, I ordered 2 pairs online! Slightly longer inseams, so I'm hopeful! And looking at new swimsuits too since, yay, my old ones are too big.

I hate saying I'm cancelling... we could say rescheduling :) But I think I should be good for our pre-beer-run-run on Saturday - I want to hear all about NYC!

    4. I hope they work! Post about them!!! :) Oops, there I go, telling you what to do again.

Okay, reschedule for next week. I think that is my last free Monday. Saturday is still good :) Maybe we should run 3 before so we can chat more ;) Although, that is a bad idea after a week off :)

    5. Stop being so bossy! :)

Monday works, let's definitely plan on that! I'm bummed because I was looking forward to running with Sara too! So can I let you know about tomorrow in the morning?

    6. Yeah, you can let me know in the am. No worries if you have to reschedule, at all ;)

  8. Yay! I'm also running the Chicago women's half. :) I think it will be a great first half- especially with Kim by your side. The half is pretty shaded for most of it, but it still was hot last year.

Take a rest day and don't regret it. Your body will thank you. I know it's hard to do when you get in the groove of working out a lot, but complete rest is absolutely necessary for preventing injuries.

Your honeymoon sounds amazing! I went to Kauii a while back and it was just stunning. You'll definitely need to see the cliffs and the canyon. For a tiny island, there's a ton of diverse landscape.

    1. Yay! I'm happy to hear the route is more shady. Being in the sun for most of the 5k was rough because I burn really easily, so I'm hoping the shade will help with that.

And thank you for saying that about rest - it's really hard to break out of that groove, so I'm trying to cross train and do incline walking on the treadmill instead of running, just to give my shins a break and still stay active.

I'd love to hear more about your trip to Kauai! Any other tips you want to share are more than appreciated :)

    2. Cross training is great! I'm injury prone when it comes to running so I cycle a lot, but now that I'm working with my coach again (Britt @ chicagorunnergirl) I only run 4 days a week. And she doesn't really want me cross training too much especially if it interferes with my running workouts. (Which drove me crazy the first week because I was cycling/running 5-7 days a week!) but now I'm used to the extra time. :) I've been dealing with a shin pain also and find my calf muscle is also really tight so I've been massaging it with the stick and a foam roller and the shin pain is almost non existent. Not sure if it will help you-

Ah Kauai. I'll have to look at my photos to see exactly where I went, but Waimea canyon, and a boat tour (plus snorkeling) of napali coast were the highlights. I also remember a restaurant called "eggberts" a simple breakfast spot that specialized in egg dishes. Just driving around you can find cool places to stop and take photos or eat. I'll have to find the name of the hiking trail I went on to see a famous waterfall. It wasn't too crazy but the views were beautiful!

    3. I have the grid foam roller (best Christmas present, ever!) and that, along with ice massage, have helped me work a lot of the pain out. One of the trainers at my gym recommended doing toe taps to stretch out before I run and I also invested in my first pair of compression socks last night, since a runner friend told me they've helped her avoid shin splints. So I think I'm ready to run again without hurting myself. I got them last year as a result of bad shoes and overuse, so I'm hoping that I'll eventually get used to running 4 days a week. I take 2-3 classes at my gym that I love, work with my trainer every other week, and do add in biking in the summer, so I'll have to figure out how to balance that and half training!

I just looked up Eggberts - they sound yummy and have great reviews, so we'll definitely check that out! I can't possibly eat enough breakfast food. Hiking to the waterfall and the boat tour both sound awesome!
